Ses batteries ne permettaient que quelques minuites de conversation. </i> «A l’époque, les gens pensaient que j’étais fou d’imaginer un téléphone qui pourrait tenir dans une poche»,</i> raconte-t-il trente-cinq ans plus tard. Il faudra attendre 1984 pour connaître un lancement à grande échelle. Tel est l'objectif du gouvernement. Il veut démocratiser rapidement le très haut débit par fibre optique et placer la France en position de force par rapport aux autres pays européens. Le gouvernement y voit un enjeu aussi important que celui du déploiement des lignes téléphoniques dans les années soixante. La loi en préparation devrait généraliser le câblage en fibre optique des immeubles neufs. Cette obligation entrera en vigueur à partir de 2010 pour les immeubles de plus de vingt-cinq logements et en 2012 pour les autres. L'accès des opérateurs aux immeubles existants sera facilité grâce à l'inscription de droit à l'ordre du jour des assemblées de copropriété des propositions de câblage des opérateurs, sous réserve que ceux-ci prennent à leur charge le coût du câblage. La réalisation dans les immeubles d'un réseau unique de fibre optique sera ouverte à tous les opérateurs.
